The Kaftan is certainly back in style
It goes somewhat against the grain to label kaftans as ‘trendy’. After all, they are exactly the kind of garment one associates with the era the 70’s fashion. Once the epitome of cool, they were consigned to the bottom of wardrobes or dispatched to charity shops as the Seventies slipped into the high-powered Eighties.
But now, believe it or not, the kaftan is back at the top of every self-respecting fashionista’s must-have list. Decked out with fine jewelled accessories and cut in the most luxurious silk fabrics, kaftans have been given a new lease of life thanks to designers such as Roberto Cavalli, Matthew Williamson and Dolce & Gabbana. Thankfully, the high street has come to the rescue with an incredible array of styles – for those of us who can’t quite afford the designer versions.
Forget those tent-like numbers once sported by The Mamas and the Papas, modern kaftans are all about over-the-top, old-school Hollywood glamour – think billowing chiffon, wedge heels and statement jewellery. Not only are they a great cover-up for women, who wish to disguise a few extra pounds, you can also wear a kaftan with jeans for a laid back casual look.
