Bernard J Hodder R.A.S.
Bernard began his career at the age of 13 when he won a place at junior art school. He went on to attend Wimbledon and Reigate schools of Art and three years postgraduate study in Fine Art at the Royal Academy Schools of Art, London. He was awarded the R.A.S. Gold Medal and Travelling Studentship.
Bernard has exhibited in the R.A. Summer Show, the Drawing Biennale, Middlesborough, an exhibition of Portraits at Princess Anne Hospital, the ‘Wessex Artists’ Salisbury and ‘Southampton Artists’ Southampton Art Centre. Works are held in public and private collections in the UK and USA.
A founder member of the Artists collective in Southampton in the early 80’s he spent the following 22 years Lecturing in Art up to ‘A’ level for Southampton City College, Barton Peveril College and Fareham College.
Since early in his career his main subject matter has been people and the urban environment, experimenting with all mediums and techniques.
For the past few years he has been working from a studio on the bank of the River Dever, a tributary of the Test. This has meant being immersed in the Hampshire landscape with it’s continual inspiration. The compositions and patterns, the effect of light and colour, throughout the changing seasons, offer the opportunity to explore the language of painting, often in more abstract terms where expression takes precedence over representation.
